Travel Advisory

Must do
Huangshan
High Speed Rails
This is because it is enriching and interesting, it shows development of China's economy and industry. We cannot get to experience such things in Singapore and should make use of the trip to China to do so

Cannot do
Sanheguzhen
Li Hong Zhang residence
Although Sanheguzhen is preserved, but it is very boring and even by going lihongzhang residence we do not truly experience what life was like there, and despite having values explained to us, it is pointless because we all know of the values but it comes down to us not being able to experience it.

Can improve
Visiting buddies house in school immersion
It makes it more interesting for us and we get to bond and live a day in the life of a person living in China.

Chingay Reflections

Chingay reflections

Yeo Zonghan
On 25th January, our school organized a learning Journey to the Chingay Parade. I was excited even before going as I had never been to one before. Upon arrival, I could see all the different people in different costumes that were preparing for the parade. We were led to our seats by the ushers which was quite far off. When the parade started, performers started streaming in from the left across the entire road. There were many people screaming and cheering which made me feel that this event was extremely lively. I was amazed by many different vehicles, structures and especially the horses. At the end of the parade, it was already late at night. Then fire works of many different colours bloomed in the sky. Their vibrant colours and patterns were truly a sight. It was truly an unforgettable memory.

Jazlyn Seng
In my opinion, the trip to Chingay was an extremely successful one. Truthfully, we had enjoyed ourselves that evening, especially when the whole year 2 cohort from river valley cheered with enthusiasm at the end of the parade. We had displayed the RV spirit by participating actively and went home feeling contented and satisfied. It was an enriching experience as well! Through the parade, we got to know more about the Singapore culture. They had introduced many items with rich historical background, some which we have never even heard of before. Lastly, the vibrant colors and patterns of the parade never failed to amaze me. It was truly a fun and enjoyable night.

Rachel Ho
The Chingay parade was an extremely rare experience for all of us, I am eternally grateful to have been given the opportunity to participate in such a national and large scale event. Although I was only one of the audience members, I could feel the spirit of all the volunteers and performers, despite the long day, everyone still tried their hardest and gave their 100%. The Chingay parade also let me be part of showing the RV spirit, at the end of the performance, RV students were all cheering and clapping, it brought everyone's' spirit up and we were all hyped up again. The Chingay parade showed me the some of Singapore culture by having floats that portray our multi racial society, there were also floats of other races so that we get to learnt about them too because at the end of the day, the lesson is that we are all One Singapore just like the theme suggests "Colours of fabric, one people" despite all of us wearing the different colours of the traditional costumes, and some even with different coloured skin tones we all are sewed together like one big fabric and thus having one heart. I had a lot of fun and it was a great experience for me, if given the chance, I would definitely go again!

Lee Si Ning

The Chingay Parade was spectacular. It was my first time watching the live performance of Chingay Parade I really enjoyed performance and appreciate the efforts put in by the performers. The costumes were very delicate and colourful. The colours used are very vibrant which captures my attention. The theme "Colours of Fabric, One People" was clearly brought out by the performance, and also the knitted cloths from different estates of Singapore. People of different races, wearing clothing of different colours, materials, but they united as one people to perform in the Chingay Parade and made it successful. It shows the unity, bonding, and no segregation among the people. So is the knitted cloths, people living in the same estate, although they might be from different races, they still put in the effort to participate in knitting the cloth together, showing their togetherness and unity as they did not reject because of the different races. They participated to knit the colours of fabric as one people. Personally, I feel that this performance was great. Not only is the performance and float display wonderful, the fact that the theme could be seen in the performances added on to the amazing performance. We could enjoy dances from different races and listen to the nice music played, it made the night a comfortable one.

In my opinion, i think that the chingay parade was very successful. It was a great opportunity for us to be at the chingay parade as not many schools were able to grab this rare opportunity. We went to the chingay parade as a whole year 2 cohort and the student councilors also accompanied us. During the parade, we did different kind of cheers led by the student councilors and this shows the rv spirit. It also act as a bonding time between my friends and I. We also learnt many things about the singapore culture such as the getai. This helped us increase our knowledge towards the singapore history. The colours at chingay was also beautiful and unforgettable. Overall i think that this was a fun and rare opportunity that we would encounter once in a life time.

The one lesson I have learnt

CID

The one lesson I have learnt so far

Jazlyn Seng
The one lesson that I have learnt so far is definitely script-writing. There are many things to take note of when planning a script. First of all, it has to be kept short and sweet. If it is too long, the audience might get bored and not pay attention. It is important to not go out of point. Otherwise, the whole script will be full of excessive information which is not needed. In order to achieve that, we have to link back to our original topic and provide the sufficient information that they require.

Rachel Ho
One thing I learnt during CID is how to work together as a group. To be honest our group is definitely not the most perfect and we are all flawed, all of us tend to procrastinate and all of us have different thoughts but throughout all the lessons where our teacher have given us free time to consolidate our thoughts and research we got to communicate and work with each other, not only are we more productive especially proven when near datelines but we are all now better friends. I think is it safe for me to say that we really appreciate the time we were given to spend together to help us work well and learn teamwork in the process.

Lee Sining
I have learnt that actually observation is very important. Not only we can understand someone, something, a situation or a picture better, from these observations, we could also improve ourselves, maybe physically, mentally or morally, or deduce what had happened and help if we could or if any help is needed. Like what we have done in lesson 2, we actually observed some pictures to better understand the picture, situation and also deduced what happened. And after knowing what actually happened, we could also learn certain values from the lesson. When we observe someone, we could better understand the person (looks, features). We could then deduce whether he is rich, kind, based on the clothing he is wearing and what he does et cetera. One last example, when we walk around the streets observing others' dressing, we could refer to the fashion nowadays and improve on our fashion sense. However, we cannot just base on observation to know and deduce what happened. After observation, we should still verify, maybe by asking, surveying or researching, to make sure what we know is actually the truth.

Yeo Zonghan
I have learned that we should appreciate the cultures of all people and not judge the people because of their culture.

Chen Zuohui
One thing i have learnt during CID lessons is note taking. As the scrip in the group, note taking is my responsibility and it is important to take down the important notes that the teacher tells us. We can apply this note taking skill outside the classroom too. For example, when going for learning journeys, i can apply my note taking skills to take down important points. I have learnt many different ways of taking notes such as writing down on paper, taking a photo with your iPad, and using short forms. All these skills are very important as we may have to use it during certain circumstances, for example, some times the teacher will be talking too quickly and we may not catch all that she says and we will have to use short forms to sad time and take down as many things as possible.

Chinese New Year

CID

CNY

Jazlyn Seng
Chinese New Year symbolizes a new year in the lunar calendar. Thus, it is a festival celebrated by Chinese from all over the world. The most popular color during this festival is red as it is said to bring good luck to everyone. Also, it is an auspicious color and is thus commonly seen everywhere on a traditional occasion like this. A famous symbol for Chinese New Year is definitely the inverted '福', which means that (happiness, good fortune etc) is arriving.

I feel that Chinese New Year is an occasion for our family to catch up with one another's life, especially with those relatives which we do not usually hang out/ meet up with. Also, it is the time to let us start our new year refreshed, leaving all our troubles back in the previous year, starting this new year without any sorrows or worries. Lastly, it is the days for us children/students to receive red packets! :))) Although it serves as a blessing from our elders, we still get very excited because of the money instead of the blessings :P

Zonghan

Chinese New Year is an occasion where people visit and spend time with their family as they may not have enough time to do so on other occasions. People would buy Chinese New Year treats to share with others especially the children. People also give their relatives red packet and wish for them to have a good year ahead. The colour red symbolizes wealth and fortune for the Chinese, hence the red packets also means wealth and fortune. The symbol for Chinese New Year would be the word 福 written upside down. The picture of Chinese New Year would be a family spending time with each other.

Chen Zuohui
The Chinese New Year means the start of a lunar year. Families get together, celebrating the new year, wishing a whole new and good year the Chinese festival marking the start of the new year, begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice and ending on the full moon fifteen days later. It is marked by visits to family and friends, special meals, fireworks and and gift giving . During Chinese New Year, red is the colour that we see everywhere as red is believed to be able to bring wealth and prosperity to a person or family.

Poverty in Singapore

Poverty in Singapore

We might not be able to witness poverty in Singapore. However, they do exist. Most of the people who live in poverty consist of mainly the elderly and foreign workers.

Elderly : Due to the fact that many children think of their parents as a burden, most of them are abandoned and have to depend on themselves to make a living and survive. However, not all of them are skilled enough to get a job in society. Thus, they become poor and hardly have enough money to get daily necessities due to the constant increase in prices.

Foreign workers : They come to Singapore  and work due to the poverty in their homeland. With the pay, they will be able to send money back home and support their family finances. However, their living conditions in Singapore remain poor. Their clothes are dirty and tattered, showing their poverty.

Our Holidays Reflections

Holiday reflections

Rachel Ho Jia Yi (6/2F) :

Although over the December holidays I did not go overseas, I genuinely enjoyed my holiday by spending most of my time with my family members and also my CCA mates. I went to explore Singapore by venturing the unfamiliar and unending streets of orchard. Through the experience I got to familiarize myself with different things and also gain new knowledge from the different experiences. Obviously I was probably most happy about getting new clothes but I went to new places I have never gone before and I especially enjoyed the period of when the Christmas and new year decorations were put up as it looked so grand and majestic. Other then that, the most memorable part of my holiday was going to uss (universal studios Singapore) with my family. I have been there for 3 times in total including the time I went during the holidays but I never got to experience some of the rides and finally after this trip I have ridden all of them. The most thrilling ride was the mummy return, I had a great laugh after it, especially after seeing my face in the pictures. I was biting on my lips and I looked like I saw a ghost but I did enjoy myself though. Finally the highlight of going to uss was the snow that was incorporated for a few weeks just to get us in the spirit of Christmas. The snow was just foam but because I have never seen snow in my entire life (not even the man-made ones at snow city) I got pretty excited and was smiling for the entire experience. I think this December holiday was well spent and I look forward to the upcoming school holidays so that I can catch up with my family members and maybe even get to spend some 'alone time'.

Lee Sining (8/2F) :
This December holiday, I went to two other countries, Taiwan and Malaysia. My family and I went to taiwan for around 7 days. We visited different places in taipei and Kaohsiung like the taipei zoo, tourists attractions, some museums and night markets. When we were at Kaohsiung, we were lucky to be able to see the large balloon parade at the dream mall. It was large balloons of cartoon characters like snoopy and mascots of certain company walking along the road in front of the dream mall. My days spent there were very enjoyable and satisfying. I had great fun in TAIWAN!! I also realized something during my vacation in taiwan. That is that their fork and spoon used for eating in food courts looks much cleaner than those used in food courts in Singapore. Also, serviettes or napkins are also provided together with the cutleries! It is really much cleaner and more hygienic than in Singapore! I also realized that the people who served us are very polite. Even aunties cleaning tables in the food court would ask kindly whether she could clear the table for us. I think Singapore can learn from taiwan services as when I was in Singapore, there was an auntie in the food court who seemed to work very unwillingly with an angry face, which made people not have the appetite to eat. I really think Singapore can work to a better service attitude.

Jazlyn Seng Jia Ying (7/2F) :
This December holiday, I went to both Hong Kong and Taiwan. The trip to Taiwan was indeed an amazing one. Over there, I learnt about the many cultures and even went to places I have never been to before. Through the tour guide's thorough explanations, I understood the Taiwanese's way of living even more ! It was not only fun, but enriching as well. Of course, we visited their famous night markets and had a whale of a time playing at little arcade booths and finding good food to eat. The stuff there are really cheap as well and I literally went crazy while shopping. We also went to Taipei 101 to admire the 360' view of Taiwan. From there, we were able to spot the magnificent buildings and also ancient, old ones with historical background. Given a headphone each, we listened as we were introduced to the different places of Taiwan. Of course, we would never miss out releasing sky lanterns over there. One by one, we wrote our wishes and released the lanterns together. To me, that was the most memorable one. Seeing all the lanterns rise up to the sky gave me a warm, tingly sensation. To conclude my stay in Taiwan, I feel that the scenery there is extremely breathtaking. The weather was also really cold at that period of time. It was something that you can never experience in Singapore. Although the trip was tiring, I really and honestly enjoyed myself. If you have not been there before, do give it a go ! You will never regret it. Next in Hong Kong, we also went to many famous tourist attractions. One of them was '新光大道', where we were able to spot the handprints of many actors/actresses. As the weather was extremely chilly, we bought hot, piping cuttlefish and ended the night admiring the decorations and lightings. Other than that, we went to 'ocean park' as well where the younger ones had fun riding the trilling roller coasters and the elders enjoying the decorations and beautiful weather. The whole trip was a pleasant one and it was a time to spend quality time with my family. The last place we went to during the December holidays was USS. Although we have been there before, it was the first time they incorporated snow. We spent the whole day trying out roller coasters we have never ridden before and enjoyed the performances and decorations they put up at night. I was pretty disappointed that the 'snow' was actually just foam. However, it was still a good experience. :) Another thing during the December holiday was that I became a shopaholic. I frequently went to the city with my mum and we would spend most of our day hunting for cheap steals and nice cny clothing. 2013's December holiday was extremely fulfilling in my opinion. Instead of staying locked up at home, we went to experience new things and explored new places. I had spent quality time with friends and families which will help build a stronger bond amongst us. I look forward to the following school holidays and hope that they will be as fulfilling as 2013. (:

Yeo Zonghan (33/2F) :
In November, I spent most of my time on the tan ka kee young inventors competition. Me and my partner had invented a shelf that could adjust the size of a compartment without having to remove the plank. In the end our invention wasn't really well done as when shifting the plank, we would have some difficulties doing it. In early December, I spent most of my time at home as that was the period when I was free. During that time I went to visit my grandmother'a home a few times. In late December, I spent almost every single morning going for my CCA. It was quite tiring but at least I had the rest of the day free. Overall, I feel that this holiday wasn't quite meaningful as I did not do much.

Chen Zuohui (22/2F) :
My holiday was very fun as I spent time with my seniors almost everyday as we have to prepare for the competitions this year. I also spent time with my family during the weekends.
